Pleased to Meet You

I’m Carolyn Dobbs, a User Experience Designer who has been leading projects and design teams for more than 10 years. I have experience in a range of categories, with strengths in product design, transactional systems and content publishing.

I bring a well-rounded perspective to design and development, having worked for household-name businesses, design firms and on my own as a consultant. I have established a design practice at a product agency and managed teams of UX designers.

After years of consulting with clients and design studios, I am now a senior manager of design within the ONE Design Community at Capital One.

Beyond Product Design

For much of my career in UX, I have focused on creating the strategy and UX for products. These days, my emphasis is on designing the larger service ecosystem and the sponsoring organization that functions around it. Too often, we focus on the product without considering the context in which it operates or the people that power it behind the scenes. How can a product flourish if the ecosystem is made up of disconnected parts, powered by people who are not able to do their best? Intentionally creating the company is a key part of building a well-functioning service, animated by valued, creative employees and enjoyed by happy constituents.

To me, curiosity is an essential quality in a user experience designer. Without an itch to learn how a business works or understand users’ needs and point points, we can’t begin to empathize with our business leads and their users.

Education & Training

My work is grounded in the history of visual culture and artistic craft. My graduate studies helped me to develop reasoned arguments, based on primary research and an evaluation of secondary sources. Since then, I have continued to attend training and workshops to stay informed.  View My Resume
